The Premier League Match Centre has clarified the reasoning behind the decision that saw Leeds United awarded a penalty against Liverpool.
The reigning champions led 2-0 at Elland Road thanks to a Hugo Ekitike brace, but Leeds were given a chance to get back into the game after a reckless challenge by Ibrahima Konate.
Konate initially avoided punishment for his slide tackle on Wilfried Gnonto, but after consulting the pitchside monitor, referee Anthony Taylor reversed his decision and awarded a penalty.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted from the spot, setting up a tense finish at Elland Road after Anton Stach picked up an equalizer two minutes later.

A statement from the Premier League Match Centre said: "After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Leeds United. Referee announcement: "Liverpool No. 5 makes a careless challenge - the ball is in play, therefore my final decision is penalty kick."
Manchester United legend Gary Neville felt Konate’s clumsy tackle left him vulnerable and deserving of punishment. "He sort of seems to tangle his legs with him - I'm not sure," said Neville on commentary. "I think he slides at the wrong angle — so clumsy from Konate.
"The ball is still in there actually as well so. He's in trouble Konate. It's really rash. Such an experienced player. That angle is conclusive. The angle from the other side I wasn't sure, but that angle is conclusive. He slides right into Gnonto, and basically wipes him out."
Leeds fans experienced brief jubilation before tension returned to Elland Road in the 80th minute, when Ryan Gravenberch found Dominik Szoboszlai breaking through the middle on a counter-attack.
The Hungarian midfielder calmly slotted the ball past Lucas Perri and wheeled away in celebration, putting Liverpool ahead 3-2.
The drama continued as the assistant referee signaled nine minutes of added time due to stoppages. Liverpool supporters were left anxious once again after six of those minutes, when Ao Tanaka volleyed the ball into the ground from close range to level the score.
The 3-3 draw leaves Liverpool eighth in the Premier League with seven wins, two draws, and six losses.
The Reds will next face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, December 9, before returning to league action against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, December 13.
